According to the Union Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is not facing a wheat shortage, since it produces significantly more wheat than it needs. Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar stated this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. During 2021-22, wheat production is estimated to be 106.41 million tonnes, which is higher than the average production of 103.89 million tonnes over the past five years, he said.
The ban on wheat exports in India has not adversely affected the income of wheat-growing farmers, because farmers are still receiving favorable remunerative prices despite the ban. The domestic wheat price is above MSP even after the export ban was imposed. To manage the overall food security of the country, the Central Government decided to restrict the export of wheat.
